Purple for World Polio Day

The Rotary Kirkintilloch Club joined GRACE members and East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA) staff on Tuesday 24th October to plant purple bulbs to raise awareness about Polio.

World Polio day was celebrated by planting two thousand purple crocus bulbs in the GRACE Serenity Garden in Hillhead Community Centre Kirkintilloch.

Pots, troughs and humpers were filled with great gusto and delicious sandwiches, salads and tasty tray bakes, teas and coffees were rewarded to the enthusiastic volunteers. It was a perfect event for everyone to come together in true community spirit to plant little symbols of hope.

East Dunbartonshire Council Hub at the William Patrick Library was lit up in symbolic purple to mark the day.

“The immunisation that prevents polio is given in the form of a sweet and sugary drop on the tongue, which proves very popular with small children. So much so that it was discovered that many youngsters were going back in to the queue to have a second drop. To prevent this every child immunised has their pinkey dyed purple and the little purple crocus bulb symbolises all those children that have been and will be saved from this crippling and sometimes fatal disease”
