A special “Help Yourself Hub”- with free food, clothing and books- has been set up in Kirkintilloch by a local community group in a bid to reduce waste and support people during the cost of living crisis.
Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Rona Mackay praised Group Recovery Aftercare Community Enterprise(GRACE) for their “wonderful initiative” at the official launch of the Hub at Hillhead Community centre last week. The Hub includes a community fridge stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables. As well as ready-made meals and other items close to their best before date. Several branches of the Co-op Tesco and Asda have already signed up to the innovative scheme and GRACE volunteers regularly add stock to the fridge on a daily basis The hub also includes brand new end of line clothing for ladies, men and children, and there is a stock of toiletries and books. GRACE founder Robert Smith, is keen to emphasise the Hub is more than just free food-it is to help prevent the stock going to landfill. Local SNP MSP Rona Mackay, who was joined by East Dunbartonshire Council leader event, said Robert and his team team have community proud once again. “This is a wonderful initiative and will be of great benefit to the environment, as well as providing support for local people during this cost of living crisis.”
Robert added; “Although this is a change to our core service of supporting people with mental health, addiction and life traumas, we just had to do something to help struggling at the moment.
“The important thing to remember is the GRACE Help Yourself Hub is more than just about helping yourself, it is also about us helping the planet.”Any companies who wish to contribute should contact GRACE at the centre or call 07401797876. Volunteers are on hand Mon-Fri from 10am-2pm, but local residents can take what they need any time. Please bring your own bag.
