GRACE – Who are we?

Thank you for your interest in GRACE. Group Recovery Aftercare Community Enterprise (GRACE) is a local peer lead membership organisation and local charity serving the whole of East Dunbartonshire. GRACE provides recovery after-care for people who have experienced life traumas such as bereavement, ill health, loneliness and isolation, mental health issues and homelessness problems and also those who are settled in recovery from addiction to alcohol, drugs or gambling.

The group provides learning, training, health and well-being activities, personal development, and physical pursuits for those in need of support, enabling them to become a positive, useful member of the family and community. We encourage all members to engage in peer support and volunteering, which may lead to better life opportunities through increased confidence and enhanced skills.

GRACE supports individuals through a recovery peer-led aftercare model, which aims to support individuals that have experienced life trauma into a brighter future. Grace offers a pathway between recovery and social inclusion, by assisting members in building confidence to overcome trauma and avoid relapsing.

Established in May 2012, the group has already harnessed the commitment of local residents, East Dunbartonshire Council and the voluntary sector to provide a weekly programme of activities in various local venues.

Our key service delivery partners includes: East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action (EDVA), East Dunbartonshire Alcohol and Drugs Services, SAMH (The Foundry), Addiction Recovery Centre (ARC) and also public partners such as Community Health Partnership (CHP), Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (ADP), Community Learning and Development Team, Hillhead Housing Association 2000, East Dunbartonshire Council and the Scottish Government.

At a local level, GRACE is the only voluntary organisation delivering peer support and membership aftercare services and this has proved to be influential.

We offer advice, support, fellowship, volunteering opportunities, social activities and educational courses.

GRACE – Meet the Team

Robert Smith

Robert Smith
CEO

Having had personal lived experience of many of the issues faced by local people in Hillhead, I realised that I needed more than just recovery. This was when the vision of a peer-led recovery after-care resource was born. As the founder of GRACE with a huge wealth of knowledge and experience in recovery and aftercare settings, one of my main skills that are transferable to the GRACE vision is the aspiration to assist individuals to live independent lives as they move forward.

Board of Trustees

The board is committed to ensuring governance in effective management of GRACE through its CEO, Robert Smith. Board members ensure that they reflect the communities in which GRACE operates. Selected for their expertise, the trustees give their energy, passion and time for continuous improvement and innovation.

Born in humble beginning in India in a family where giving and caring for community was a daily routine. Although I did not have maturity to understand humanity it always made me immensely happy. My long professional career as a medical practitioner in NHS provided perfect environment to my ever-increasing passion to help others and to make a difference in life of others. After retiring, I found GRACE at my doorstep in Kirkintilloch. I have been fortunate to have had opportunity to serve GRACE in capacity of a trustee. I love to be a part of GRACE because all my passion about values, people’s wellbeing, equality, inclusion and educations are in parallel with GRACE’s ethos. In addition to working with GRACE, I volunteer to educate children in schools, help older people in the community, lead health walks and in past I mentored in a project for rehabilitation of prisoners.

Having spent most of my working life in logistics, I found myself suffering from anxiety and depression. Fortunately I was introduced to GRACE in 2019 where I became a volunteer and was involved in, and later managed, the Foodshare project. In 2021 I was honoured to be elected to the Board of Trustees and became Chair in 2024.

I joined GRACE as a volunteer and member in August 2023. I have diligently worked hard to support its ethos; to help provide aftercare for those who have experienced any form of trauma. I also engaged in many of the activities it provides along with minute-taking for the board. I became a Trustee in 2024 and will endeavor to maintain GRACE’s esteemed reputation.
